ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY! APPRECIATION FOR MY PROFICIENT STUDENT!

As I don’t want to reveal the gender of the concerned student, I will refer to them as “they” – as one should in these situations.

When they approached me for classes (a year ago), their level of English was already advanced. They resorted to English classes because they had taken on further and greater responsibilities within their senior position, which required more interaction with international partners.

They needed to boost their confidence, familiarise themselves with new terminology.

From the get-go, they were humble enough to express that they felt that I was the right person to do the job.

One of the first things I remind my students of, is that in my class, there are no titles and that they will be expected to behave as students (some nationalities love titles too much). I never had to keep reminding the herein honouree, of that. What a democratic and agreeable boss!

As a translator and lawyer, using words with the right connotation is paramount. So, during classes, we engage in discussions regarding which word my students think best suits a situation. And that can be very empowering to them as well.

My student of one year is a very detailed person, open-minded, sophisticated, and extremely driven. They attend class even when they are abroad.

The storyteller side of me brings playfulness into the classroom, but without distraction. My students are the main characters, and it gives me grrrreat pleasure to see them evolve and blossom.

The topics and conversations are always interesting and personalised (“personalized” is USA English). We fear nothing because we are humble enough to do our research and discuss our findings. And my favourite part is when they start correcting themselves because what they just said doesn’t sound right.

If you want to ACQUIRE a language, your mind needs to be fully engaged and I can guarantee you that such an immersion is what I take pride in, to what concerns my students’ experience.

Regarding the “one year anniversary student”, why are they still with me? Because they enjoy the conversations and I sense that they want to overthrow me, somehow. It’s the constant and out of control ladder climbing burning desire. I don’t know! 😊.

Thank you, my dear student, for being so passionate and a beautiful human being, whom I can call FRIEND, now!

Guys, come alone or in groups, but come!
